OK LET’S START WITH THE EASY PART, THIS IS A SCAM!
Imagine checking your emails at home one evening and seeing an email from Greater Manchester Police informing you that they are prosecuting you for a speeding offence, not a little one either you were purportedly doing 80 mph in a 30 mph zone. Checking the reported details of the offence you are sure you were not in that location around that date and time but they have evidence highlighted by a Red button and bang they got you.
You are going to click that big red button because you want to see the evidence, you are scared and want to know what they have got so you click it.
If you do click the link, you will be taken to a fake website that has been designed to look like the genuine Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership website. To further the illusion of legitimacy, the fake site asks you to fill in a captcha box, ostensibly to allow access to the “photographic evidence” of your driving offence. After you hit the “submit” button on the captcha, a .zip file will download to your computer.
Should you get hit with the one that encrypts your files, you can’t get them back as even if you pay the scammers you never receive the key to unlock them. That’s all your document and photos lost forever.
